Welcome Home, Your Majesty

Charlotte in rose hat with snack

So nice to have Charlotte, Daisy and Dad back under the same roof with the rest of us. Everyone got home late last night—Dad from Mexico, Charlotte and Daisy from their side trip to visit their friend Ace in San Francisco.

Although she was tired, Charlotte obliged me by posing for a quick snapshot before taking off her hat and diving into a light snack.

Charlotte Has Breakfast in Bed

This morning found Her Majesty all smiles—well rested and delighted to be waking up in her own little bed after all these weeks. Daisy Mouse climbed in to visit while Giselle served breakfast and Blackie stole admiring glances. Life is good!

Hope life is good today for all of you reading this, also—Happy Wednesday, Everyone!

Mad Tea Party

Giselle, Charlotte’s maid, has taken excellent care of the rest of us these past few weeks, while she and Dad have been away on holiday. Giselle has a fairly relaxed style of housekeeping however, similar to Hatta, the Hatter’s, where it’s always time for tea and snacks, and, once dishes are soiled, one simply moves on to the next clean place setting.

Blackie and Max's Mad Tea Party

This approach works best I’ve found, when there aren’t any other human witnesses, and when one doesn’t mind busloads of new mice showing up to join the party. And it works great as long as the clean dishes (and after that, the paper plate supply) holds out.

Illustration from Alice in Wonderland by John Tenniel

Which is to say, with Dad, Charlotte and Daisy all coming home from their trip today, I think I’d better go upstairs and lend a hand. It sounds like Blackie’s already started vacuuming, and I don’t think Max and Flora are going to be able to lick all those dishes clean by themselves!

Have a great Tuesday Everyone, and good luck with whatever special projects you are working on today, too.

And Dad, if you’re reading this, don’t worry—I’m just kidding about the house (sort of). See you later at the airport, and meanwhile, have a good flight!

The Red Carpet

I didn’t get to watch as much of the Academy Awards programming last night as I would have liked, which was a little disappointing, since I really love all that red carpet who’s-wearing-what stuff that goes on (and on) beforehand. Blackie made a few quick sketches for me though, so I wouldn’t miss all the fun.

Michelle and Rooney

He hasn’t seen “My Week with Marilyn” or “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” yet, but Blackie loved Michelle’s red frock and Rooney’s quirky constructed white gown. I thought they both looked great also, though my own idea of a perfect dress-up dress is a little more frilly—something more along the lines of Fleur Delacour’s ornate black and white wedding dress in The Deathly Hallows, Part 1. (I’d have given a dress like that its very own Oscar, if it were up to me.)

Jean Dujardin wins Best Actor
Once the actual awards ceremony was underway, I did settle in to watch, and caught most of the rest of the show. I couldn’t have been happier when Jean Dujardin won Best Actor. I was really charmed by his performance in “The Artist.”

I doubt his fellow nominees were as happy, of course—except perhaps for Brad, who was there with the lovely Angelina. He seems like a guy with a lot of things to be happy about—award or no.

Brangelina and Brood

Speaking of happy, I’m really glad that Dad, Charlotte, and Daisy Mouse will all be home from their extended Mexico vacation tomorrow. It feels like they’ve been gone forever!

Until then, congratulations to all the Oscar winners (way to go, Meryl!) and Happy Monday Everyone!

And The Award Goes To…Dorothy Designs

Dorothy and SteveI’m picturing a busy morning over at Ace the cat’s, where  preparations for his Oscar Party are well underway. I see that Steve, Ace’s human, is done posting his Annual Movie Page, and is heading out to buy more milk.  Ace’s other human, Dorothy, is making a few more flower pins and then will finish tidying up. Ace, of course, is hard at work, too: He’s taking a bath.

I’m also picturing Charlotte, as she and Daisy board a plane for San Francisco. (She’s due to head home from Mexico in a few days anyway, and Ace’s party’s on the way. Plus, she’d just hate to miss the fun!)

Here’s what else I see…

When Charlotte and Daisy arrive, Ace answers the door, in his handsome gray tux.

Oscar Party: Charlotte and Daisy Arrive

He ushers them both inside, where an impressive buffet awaits.

Oscar Party Buffet

The Awards go off without a hitch, and Billy Crystal is in great form. Soon the humans toddle off to bed, and things really start to swing.

Disco Party

When the other cats and mice finally leave, Ace shows Charlotte and Daisy to their special guest quarters. Surprise! It’s a soft bed made from Dorothy’s hand-sewn flowers (Charlotte’s favorite).

The Guest Room

In the morning, Charlotte and Daisy are out the door early, leaving Ace to his job of sorting all that lovely floral inventory. —And also leaving him to wonder: Was it all a dream?

Dorothy Designs and Ace

As you can see, I’ve been dreaming about Dorothy Designs. —Ever since this pretty red rose I ordered from her Etsy shop arrived. Dorothy’s an old and dear friend, and does beautiful work. Do visit her shop sometime…so many pretty things to see!

Dorothy Designs Rose PinHave a fun Oscar Sunday, Everyone—and good luck with your party, Ace! Charlotte and Daisy, we’ll see you both soon…

Kid Stuff

As I was going through some boxes of old artwork today, I found these cool drawings Blackie and Max had made when they were kittens—age 6 and 8 months—as well as a more recent sketch by Flora.

Cats' Doodles

I’d been hunting around to see if I might find one or two very early doodles of my own to include in my display at Art in Action this Friday. My hunch is that some of the other artists will be showing work from different time periods, and I’d like to fit in with the group as best I can.

In a folder Mom had marked “Age 3 – 4” I came across a lot of  fashion drawings to choose from, but most of these were just isolated little doodles floating in white space, like the last lonely cookie on an enormous plate. I’ve ganged up a few of them here to show you. (These are all drawings of outfits I wish I’d owned, by the way.)

Fashionable Girls

This one with the girls and the umbrellas is more like a real, developed scene, but in between the grimaces and the black flower and navy blue sun, it’s perhaps too edgy?

Raindrop Scene

I kind of like this portrait of George W (the original), done when I was a bit older. I’d apparently learned how to draw noses by then—a real milestone in any artist’s development.

George Washington

Then I came across my favorite by far—this colorful drawing of a peacock. Which, it turns out my sister Carol had drawn. Too bad—I really love this one! Back when she was 8 and I was 6, I must have been gnashing my teeth with envy when I saw this. (Still kind of am.)

Carol's Peacock

Carol and Jean

Speaking of Carol, she’s kindly agreed to come down from Madison to help man my table at the event on Friday. I’m so glad! Everything’s just more fun when she’s around.

Meanwhile, I still haven’t talked her into letting me hang her peacock in the show—pretending that I drew it myself—but I’m working on it. Stay tuned.

Blackie Delivers

Two more wonderful friends from the old country (i.e., Way Back When) had birthdays today. Not wanting to let this special occasion go unmarked, Blackie got up extra early to make them each a cake.

Happy Birthday Rebecca

I’m a decent cook myself, but not much of a baker. So I’m in awe of Blackie’s skills as a pastry chef—especially the way he gets his sugar roses ‘just so.’ (Don’t they look nice?)

Happy Birthday Bob

But even more impressive to me is how he could deliver one cake to NYC before breakfast, the other to Minnesota, and still be home in time to help dig out from last night’s snow. (My hunch is, some Dobby-esque apparition skills were involved—especially given that we were snowbound until lunchtime.)

Dad, these Before & After photos of our driveway are especially for you, as you savor your last few days in balmy Mexico. I know you must miss us all, but aren’t you glad you’re not here?

Little Helpers

Max Poses as Thomas Gainsborough's Blue Boy

I’ll bet some of you are wondering, “Doodling cats and mice must take up a helluva lot of Jean’s time. How does she get anything else done?”

OK, I’ll admit, some days it’s an issue. But most of the time, the whole doodle-and-blog thing is offset by the cats’ willingness to help out with other stuff. For instance, here you see Blackie and Max, hard at work in my studio today, creating a new masterpiece for Art in Action, which is happening next week. (Thanks a bunch, guys!)

Case History

Here’s another prime example of my feline support team coming through—this time on a recent illustration assignment for a Canadian client.

The two images below comprised my first round of sketches, variations on the same theme: Canada and Russia creating an alliance to keep U.S. shipping interests out of the Arctic region.

Jean Tuttle Concept Sketches

When I showed these concepts to the art director, he asked if I wouldn’t mind stripping everything out but the beaver and bear, adding in an eagle, and developing them all as characters.

Great idea, but not much time to hunt down reference. Blackie and crew to the rescue!

Cats Modeling

Even though it was late at night, and we were all tired, the cats did a fantastic job of getting into character, resulting in the final printed piece you see below. I was happy, the art director was pleased, and even Charlotte liked it. (I was worried she’d think I made her nose/beak too big.)

Global Brief Illustration by Jean Tuttle

On that note, I’m going to go rouse my napping felines and see if they’d like to help me shovel the driveway—quite a bit of snow here today. Have a good night everyone and see you on here tomorrow!

Big Cheese at Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras

Our boy Blackie just got back to Chicago after a quick trip to Mardi Gras, where he served as “Big Cheese” at this year’s Krewe of Fromage Parade. This is a huge honor for anyone, but especially for a cat, since Krewe membership is generally restricted to mice—and only those from New Orleans high society, at that.

You may notice that the costume Blackie wore as he performed his royal duties bears a slight resemblance to the one worn by “King” Will Ferrell, who reigned over Sunday’s Krewe of Bacchus Parade—a similar event with a few key differences: Including, Will reportedly tossed beads, coins and cowbells into the crowd—not cheese. (What fun is that?)

Happily for us, there was a ton of cheese leftover after the celebration, which Blackie filled his suitcase with, and toted home. This meant that on the heels of Fat Tuesday, we all enjoyed a Big Fat Wednesday around here, too. (Likely to be followed by Puffy Thursday, Muffin Top Friday, and Elastic Waistband Saturday.)

Meanwhile, congratulations, Good King Blackie, on your wonderful and well-deserved honor. Whether it’s on top of a mouse float, all duded up, or under the piano, fast asleep (like you are right now), you definitely rule!

Laundry Night

Tonight, I’m planning to spend the wee hours (which are still ahead) catching up on laundry. I can’t help but think of how nice it would be if Charlotte was back from her trip and were here to assist. Lounging around on neatly folded piles of clothes is something she excels at.

Charlotte Helping with the Laundry

The good news is, in just one week, our darling girl—and Lucky Pierre (AKA Dad)—will be back from Puerto Vallarta. I can hardly wait!

Meanwhile, I spent the wee hours last night harvesting roses from a couple of books I had bought at Goodwill. I thought it would be fun to add some of these to my tiny little cat doodles. Once I finish some of these up, I’ll post them for you to see.

Little Doodles

Well, I’d better go put that first load of laundry in. Sweet dreams everybody and see you on here again tomorrow.

Shopping on the Malecón

Lady SkeletonHappy Presidents Day!

Even though Charlotte and Daisy Mouse are still in Puerto Vallarta, they observed the day as they would back home—by shopping, of course.

Dad was out and about today as well, strolling along the Malecón. He snapped this photo for me, knowing how much I enjoy colorful Mexican folk art.

This fashionable Day of the Dead figure caught Charlotte’s eye as well, as she and Daisy made their rounds, a little later in the day.

Charlotte Goes Shopping

I hope everyone had a wonderful Presidents Day, however you may have spent it!
