It’s The Thought That Counts…Right?

Happy Birthday Hannah!
Dearest Niece,
Just as our friend Blackie missed the mark a bit with your special cake (which I understand is filled with meatloaf and liverwurst), your dotty aunt missed getting to the post office in time to mail a special greeting to you. Ugh—I’m so sorry. Hope I can redeem myself the next time I see you, and hope to see you very soon. In the meantime, happy milestone birthday! As your grandma said to me when I was your age, “Have a twenty-one-derful day, celebration, and year ahead — And may each and every dream you have come true!”
Lots of love,
Aunt Jean, Charlotte, Blackie, Max, Flora, Daisy Mouse, Aaron, and Giselle

Rainbow Pride

Happy Pride Day!
Today was the big Pride Parade in Chicago, attended by an estimated 1 million—a larger and more jubilant celebration than usual, owing to the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down DOMA earlier this week.

We may have celebrated a little differently out here in the ‘burbs—Charlotte, for example, “got her pride on” with a rainbow manicure—but celebrate, we did.

Jack Hunter’s New Yorker Cover

Speaking of the Supreme Court’s decision re DOMA, for those of you who haven’t seen it yet online, there’s a wonderful New Yorker cover hitting the stands this week that you may want to look out for. The illustration was created by my Blown Covers friend, Arizona-based illustrator Jack Hunter. You can read more about it here.

What are Blown Covers? Last year, Francoise Mouly, the New Yorker’s art editor, ran a weekly (later monthly) contest on a Tumblr blog, inviting artists to submit cover illustrations—concept sketches vs. final artwork preferred—on assigned themes. The blog was designed to help publicize a new book Francoise had published on rejected (AKA “Blown”) New Yorker cover artwork. For me and many other artists, it was a fun, creative sandbox to play in (both with each other and Francoise), and an excuse to create some new samples. And while there was no prize for winning, and no print publishing rights granted or purchased, the blog was a nice venue for participating artists like me to have our work seen by a different/wider audience.

Jean Tuttle Blown CoverWhile the contest no longer runs (and the website appears to be down at present), a web-archived version of the original Blown Covers Gay Marriage Contest may still be viewable here. An earlier version of Jack Hunter’s “Bert & Ernie” cover was the winner. Runners-up include a really nice image of two women about to kiss by Gayle Kabaker (whose work later appeared on another gay marriage-themed New Yorker cover, June Brides), and one of my own Blown Covers submissions, as well (shown to the left.)

You can also read more about The Blown Covers Contest on this doodle blog—filtered through our cat Charlotte’s point of view—and see some of my own past submissions here. (Keep in mind,  with the Blown Covers site not currently active, none of the links referring to the site will work. There is, however, a gallery of my own Blown Covers submissions on my website.)

Meanwhile, congratulations again, Jack! A landmark occasion…a fantastic illustration…and one of my very favorite New Yorker covers ever!

UFOs: Ursula’s Found Objects

Update – 5/23/13

Ursula’s Kickstarter project (which you can read about below) has hit the $4K mark, but still has a ways (and less than a month) to go. Please consider donating, or helping to spread the word by forwarding a link to this post, or to her Kickstarter page directly: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1419160235/art-alien-reconstruction-team

You can also check out her project’s blog here for more info and updates. Go, Ursula!

Ursula Roma’s ART: Alien Reconstruction Team Project

My friend Ursula Roma, a Cincinnati-based artist, illustrator and designer, is a genius at transforming found objects (like gears and watch parts and discarded hardware) into fabulous fine art constructions. —Which include wild and whimsical animals, fantastic birds, mythical beings, humanoid-type creatures, and little space aliens, too!

Artist Ursula Roma

Above are a few of her found objects sculptures from an exhibit she had at Wilmington College last fall; below are some of my favorites from her art blog and Facebook page. (Thanks again for letting me borrow these images, Urs.)

Check out the nail file “feathers” on Ursula’s fabulous thunderbird…

Or the hypnotic gaze of this dazzling owl…

Ursula Roma Owl…Or the fun way Ursula combines 3-D and 2-D with this bird and trees and starry sky.

Ursula Roma BirdUrsula's Little AlienReconstructing space aliens (and telling their stories) is the focus of Ursula Roma’s delightfully imaginative new Kickstarter project, ART – Alien Reconstruction Team, in which she plans to create 50 of these found-art creatures as she travels across the U.S. — And that’s just for starters!

In her own words (from her Kickstarter page): “I will travel 50 states, resurrect wounded extraterrestrials, repair their spaceships, send them home, and then create an amazing book!” —Which, knowing Ursula as I do, I have no doubt that she will.

When I first heard about Ursula’s idea, watched the cool video she’d made about it, and saw how thoughtfully and thoroughly she’d mapped out her vision — which is part artistic challenge, part grand adventure, part creative collaboration, and 100% fun/unique — I was both charmed and hooked. I pledged my support right away, as did Dad when I sent him the link.

Ursula’s little aliens even made it into the next morning’s cat doodle. (Once you climb aboard her vision, it’s hard not to see little aliens needing rescue/reconstruction everywhere you look.)

Charlotte Rescues an Alien

If you haven’t funded a Kickstarter project before, or aren’t yet familiar with what it’s all about, Kickstarter is a great way to support an artist, inventor or other worthy party in realizing their creative vision, for as little as a few bucks (or as much as you would like to give). Most projects have great premiums for their various donation levels (like t-shirts, prints, books, etc.) that make buying into something you’d like to see happen a real no-brainer. (And btw if the project doesn’t reach its funding goal, no money changes hands.)

Catlow TheaterFor example, my hometown theater, The Catlow, a classic 1920s-era gem, launched a successful Kickstarter project last summer to fund the costly digital projection equipment they needed to survive. For as little as $10 one could not only help save The Catlow, but would get a voucher for a free movie ticket and popcorn, to boot. —A no-brainer, like I was saying. Fortunately 1,394 backers agreed: The project exceeded its goal by $75K, and our theater was saved. (Hoorah!)

Or Kickstarter might also be a place to seek funding for your own creative project, like Ursula has…? (Something to think about…)

Meanwhile, Ursula’s ART – Alien Reconstruction Team proposal expires on June 16th, and could use somewhere between 500 and 1000 more backers before then to help make it happen. I sure hope you might consider being one of them! — Or might consider sharing the link http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1419160235/art-alien-reconstruction-team with a deep-pocketed, art-loving, alien-friendly friend (or two). The aliens (and I) thank you! —As will Ursula and Maggie (the project’s canine Sniff Commander), pictured below.

Ursula and Maggie
Happy Monday, and have a creative and wonderful week, everyone! Thanks, as always, for visiting, and see you on here again real soon.

Charlotte, Party Girl

Oppan Charlotte Style

Anyone who knows Charlotte knows how much she loves parties…and presents! So she was very excited to be invited to our friend Beatrice’s birthday celebration last Wednesday night.

Going over to the Duffy’s house is kind of like going home for Charlotte, since that’s where she was first found and rescued by Beatrice’s daughter Karen, before coming to live with us. She’s also very fond of Beatrice’s young granddaughters, Dasha, Kristina & Vera. And Aaron Mouse couldn’t wait to meet their cousin Charlie, and hopefully learn some new dance moves (which he did).

Before we left to go over there, Charlotte and Aaron put together some party favors to take along — little packets of collage stuff to glue into drawings — since their young friends are all artists, too.

Party Favors

Each packet had a message tucked inside of it. I was feeling nosey, so I read Kristina’s, before sealing them up.

Card for KristinaStampMeanwhile, it was my (fun) job to put together Beatrice’s birthday card. Here’s the stamp, the label, the card, and a snapshot of the (somewhat gaudy) envelope, too. (It was Charlotte’s idea to glue on the jewels.)

I just drew the doodle portions of the card, by the way, not the pretty colored flowers, most of which I cut out of a gardening book. (I know…tsk, tsk!)

Label

The card was very long, but folded up.

Here’s Charlotte again, giving Beatrice her card, and a bit later, trying on the lovely new bathrobe that Beatrice’s son Neil had given her for her birthday. Very, very nice! (Daisy Mouse loved it as well.)

Animal Fun

After the party, I went home and worked on this drawing with elephants in it for my page in “Draw It Out,” a new activity book coming out from Art with Heart. (I promised the girls I’d share it with them, so here it is.)

Tuttle Mandala Art FinalOther Projects

I’m realizing I haven’t posted any other recent illustration projects on here in a while, but I did just update my website with new images a few weeks ago, so please do take a gander when you have time. Meanwhile, just for fun, here is one of my recent favorites, for Global Brief magazine. (More animal fun!)

Jean Tuttle for Global Brief Contrary to appearances, I don’t get to draw animals all that often—for assignments, anyway—but I really enjoy it when I do. In this one the kangaroo symbolizes Australia and the dragon symbolizes Asia, for a feature discussing history and relations between the two.

OK, time for me to sign off for now. Thanks again to Beatrice, Dennis, Karen, and all the Duffys for a wonderful time last week, and the immense pleasure of seeing you all. Wishing you (and everyone reading this) a very good night, the sweetest of dreams, and a pleasant tomorrow!

Happy Easter 2013!

Easter Bunny

Easter means Easter baskets, and Easter baskets mean new places to nap, if you’re a cat. —Making Easter one of Charlotte’s very favorite holidays all year.

Of course, Easter is also about what’s inside those baskets (besides Miss Kitty). Just for fun, here are two I put together earlier this week “from Charlotte” to send to my aunt and little sister.

Easter Baskets

And below is the breakfast table doodle Dad got on Monday—the day he planned to mail these baskets out for me.

Details Schmetails

If you’re like our girl Charlotte, Easter also means Fashion, and finding just the right bonnet, as seen in yesterday’s breakfast table doodle.

Charlotte's Bluetooth Bonnet

Which bonnet would she choose? Charlotte decided to sleep on it—literally.

Charlotte Sleeps On It

In the end she went with a more traditional all-floral look…captured, more or less, in Dad’s “special edition” breakfast table doodle from this morning (below).

Easter Bunny Was Here

Speaking of morning doodles. my good friend Gayle got one today as well, in honor of her birthday—and as thanks for the very cool one she drew for me, when I had a birthday a few weeks back. (Hope it’s been a splendid one, m’dear, kicking off a fabulous year ahead!)

Happy Birthday, Gayle!

Meanwhile, I realize that Passover, Easter (and spring itself) have deep meaning for many—well beyond bonnets, chocolate, and extra naps. I hope that however you spent this week or this day, it was peaceful and happy…a time of joy and renewal…and included some sweet moments with the people you love (whether 2-legged or 4).

Here’s to a great week ahead and a beautiful spring for us all!

Return of the Leprechaun Space Mice

Stalking Leprechauns

Happy Saint Patrick’s Day, everyone!

Where I live, I’m the only one with any Irish ancestry, but that doesn’t prevent the whole household from enjoying the holiday. Charlotte’s been out stalking leprechauns in her green party dress all day, while Charlotte’s French maid Giselle has been slaving away in a hot kitchen, cooking up a delicious traditional feast of corned beef and colcannon (recipe below).

Colcannon and Corned Beef

(The kitchen was so hot, apparently, that Giselle was at one point cooking in her birthday suit—or so the above photo would suggest.)

Last night, Giselle treated all the little mice in the household to a special Saint Patrick’s Eve bedtime story, The Return of the Leprechaun Space Mice. (I took notes so I could recreate it for Dad’s breakfast table doodle this morning. See below.)
Return of the Leprechaun Space Mice

Leprechaun EggsIf you’re wondering where the green leprechaun eggs really come from, the answer is, on top of our fridge, where Dad and I are collecting things to put in my little sister’s Easter basket in a couple of weeks. They are made by Reese’s and filled with peanut butter. Quite delicious!

Note: For my Weight Watchers friends reading this, 7 of these foil-wrapped eggs normally has about 5 points (200 cals), but on St. Patrick’s Day, the ones wrapped in green foil don’t have any points at all—imagine! Giving us one more reason (and way) to celebrate the day.

Colcannon Recipe

For those not familiar with it, colcannon is sort of an Irish version of loaded mashed potatoes—a delicious dish containing potatoes, shredded cabbage or chopped kale (though I use both in mine), leeks or scallions, a little nutmeg, milk, and butter…lots and lots of butter. Martha Stewart’s colcannon recipe calls for 4 tablespoons—2 in the dish itself, and 2 more plopped on top just before serving.

I follow Martha’s recipe to a degree, but since I don’t have much luck with mashing potatoes from scratch, I cheat and buy readymade ones from Bob Evans and then just hide the evidence in the trash really quick. (Kind of like when I make “homemade wink wink” pie crust. Thank you, Pillsbury.) Be prepared to cut back a bit on the milk if you do the same. I also substitute chopped kale for half of the cabbage, and use scallions instead of the leeks that Martha calls for. I mix in 1/4 cup or so of finely shredded aged Irish cheddar and a handful of chopped parsley at the end, just for the hell of it. I drizzle melted butter on top of the dish before broiling, so the whole thing browns a bit more, versus making a little swimming pool of butter in the middle, like she does (though the household mice would have loved that, I’m sure). I also added some cooked bacon this time, since, when I passed a spoonful of the vegetarian version over to Dad to sample, he said it tasted “fine.” —And we all know what “fine” means. So Dad not only got bacon, he got a little bonus doodle, a few minutes later. (See below, wet paw marks courtesy of Charlotte.)

Giselle's FIne Cooking

"They're Magically Delicious!"However you spent your Saint Patrick’s Day—whether stalking leprechauns in the garden, eating chocolate eggs, or having fun making, eating (or drinking!) traditional Irish fare, I hope you had a wonderful day and weekend. Happy Saint Patrick’s Evening, everyone, and have a magically delicious week ahead! (Sorry, I couldn’t resist.)

Meanwhile, a special shout-out to my Irish friends and kin, especially Aunt Lorraine, all my cousins, my wickedly funny sister Carol and my one-eighth-Irish nieces, dear friends Eileen & Beth, and all the Duffy clan—who I know are celebrating something extra special tomorrow, too. (Happy Almost Birthday, Karen!)

Happy Mermaid Day!

Pisces Mermaid
We’re about half-way through the sign of Pisces, which began in late February, and runs through most of March. So it seems only fitting to celebrate the mermaids among us, before it’s too late!

This includes a very special one—a dear friend, fellow artist, and kindred spirit—who’s having a birthday today. Here’s to you, Susan, and to everything wonderful coming your way—today, this year, and always!

Mermaid Mea CulpaAnd to all my Pisces friends—those with birthdays still ahead this month, as well as those whose birthdays I’ve already (sadly) missed—especially Jill, Rebecca, Diana & Bob: Best wishes for an excellent year ahead, filled with happiness, health, calm waters, and smooth sailing!

—And the same to the rest of you, no matter when your birthday falls. 🙂

P.S. A special thanks to Karen Watson, for the sea-themed collage elements used at left. —From her vintage clip art site, The Graphics Fairy.

Have a great Sunday night, everyone, and a terrific week ahead. See you all soon!

A Little Help From My Friends

Shoemaker's Elves
Miss Mouse just thinks I’m still asleep. I’m actually up working, finishing some new collages for the First Friday Art in Action: Passport to Creativity Event at the Dole Mansion tomorrow night.

Every year around this time, the Lakeside Legacy Foundation puts on a special free, family-friendly evening showcasing the artists who rent studio space there (or who teach or study at Amber Larsen’s Creative Arts “art cottage” in the mansion’s backyard). It’s very festive & fun: art to look at (and buy), studios to see…appetizers, music, cash bar…and the old, beautiful (and some say haunted) Dole Mansion, open to tour.

A number of the resident art partners will also be set up in the main gallery at easels or tables in front of their work, painting or doing live demos. (Or in my case, working on a collage, like the one in progress shown here.)

Collage in Progress

I’ll be showing about 7 of my collages, including the recently completed “Queen of the Sea,” pictured below. All are created from old fine art prints or vintage photos, Victorian scraps and paper lace, metallic & glitter paints—plus the odd cat or mouse paw print.

Queen of the Sea
If you’re in the Northwest Chicago suburbs tomorrow night—or would like to be—please do stop by and say hello. I’d love to meet & visit with you, and know my talented neighbors would be thrilled to as well. Lakeside Legacy Arts Park, home of the Dole Mansion, is located at 401 Country Club Road in Crystal Lake, IL, and the event runs from 5 – 8 PM on Friday, March 1st. Click here for more info, and for a list of the visual artists, photographers and musicians who will be participating.

Meanwhile, last I heard, when I saw them both on Tuesday, Jeanine Hill-Soldner will be painting from a live model on Friday night, and Johanna Gullick will be demonstrating her watercolor technique. Both are truly wonderful artists and were a huge hit at last year’s event. Keep a special eye peeled for them as well!

Jeanine Hill-Soldner & Johanna Gullick

Thanks, as always, for visiting The Daily Cat Doodle. (And special thanks to Erin, and all the staff , volunteers, and artists at Lakeside Legacy Foundation, who make Art in Action the terrific event that it is.)

Happy Birthday, Mark!

Happy Birthday MarkHere’s to Mark, who’s celebrating a birthday this week! Husband to Becky, father to Anna, and friend to many, including Plugger the bunny and Bailey the pig (at the urban farm where he volunteers). Great gardener and giver of raspberry bushes. Deep thinker, avid reader & writer. Patient penpal (luckily for me). Skilled maker of fine scale models, which you can see on his website (and also commission).

Speaking of Mark’s models, one of the most thoughtful gifts I ever received was this miniature version of the Northwoods cabin where my grandmother had lived as a little girl. The model is tiny, less than 2 inches square. It came with small figures, and furniture, too—a potbelly stove, a bed, and 2 benches.

Keeler Cabin

Here’s another model, this one from Mark’s website, that I remember him working on when I still lived in Denver—the house in the background of Grant Wood’s famous painting. (To not only visualize, but to construct something like this, seems incredible to me.)

merican Gothic House
One more, just so you can see the scale and detail…Littleton, Colorado’s one-room school house (now part of their historical museum).

Littleton Schoolhouse
So here’s to Mark, amazing model-maker, great fellow, dear friend: Thanks for being the wonderful person you are! Have a fabulous celebration, kicking off a grand year ahead, and may all your birthday wishes come true.
