Happy Valentine’s Day!

Happy Valentine's Day

Blackie sure wishes he could share some sweets with his sweetie today, but Charlotte is still miles away in sunny Jamaica (and having a wonderful time).

Here was today’s daily doodle that I’d packed in Dad’s luggage before they left, showing Charlotte and Daisy Mouse receiving their Valentine’s Day mail.

Doodle Day 10

My own Valentine make-and-do activities were pretty limited this year. I didn’t get around to sending any homemade Valentines, alas—which of course are the best (to give or to receive).

But I did run across these snapshots I’d taken and posted on Facebook last February, when Charlotte and I had made a bunch of Valentines to send to our friends’ dogs. (Charlotte doesn’t actually like many dogs, so this made the list small enough that the project was manageable.) You can see her taking a meal break (chicken pot pie) and a couple of naps in between her inspection duties. As fun as it was, it was also pretty tiring!

Charlotte Valentines 2012

I did create a Valentine collage though, a few weeks ago, for the February First Friday Event at the Dole Mansion (where my studio is). Here it is,  just for fun. The female figure is from a print of a painting by El Greco, Woman in a Fur Wrap. (Thanks again, Gary, for giving me your old art books, and letting me take a scissors to them.)

Tuttle Valentine Collage

It’s been pretty busy with illustration projects lately, and a recent (ongoing) update to my website, but I’m still hoping to create a few more large collages for the upcoming  March First Friday event, Art in Action, Stay tuned. (Or if you happen to be in the Chicago Northwest suburbs, please come by on March 1st to check it out and say hello!)

Just for fun, here is my doodle report on last year’s event.

Meanwhile, all I can say is, thank God for email and blogs and Facebook and such, allowing us procrastinators to still send out Valentines to our clients, friends and loved ones—if only in the very nick of time.

Happy Valentine’s Night, everyone! However you spent your day today, I hope it felt fun and special and involved some chocolate. (Mine almost didn’t, until I found an unopened jar of hot fudge sauce in the pantry about an hour ago. Score!)

Thanks, as always, for stopping by The Daily Cat Doodle, and have sweet dreams tonight.

P.S. Thanks also (once again) to Karen Watson, The Graphics Fairy, this time for the wonderful antique Valentine frame used in the opening cat doodle.  And also to Karen D. (Charlotte’s special friend) for the Valentine goodies I found on the front stoop earlier tonight. (I know Charlotte’s gonna be thrilled to see them when she comes home on Monday, and in the meantime, I’m loving them, of course. Thanks so much; you are the best!)

Charlotte in Paradise

Countdown to Paradise

Nah, I’m not headed for Paradise—at least not anytime soon. Charlotte’s already there though, vacationing with Dad in Jamaica. The above doodle is from a few days before they left. We were all real happy for Charlotte, getting to escape from wintry Chicagoland for a couple of weeks. But towards the end, her daily countdown (and constant swimsuit modeling) was getting on everyone’s nerves.

At one point, Blackie had really hoped he might join them—if nothing else, to keep an eye on his (unrequited) sweetie as she strolled the beach in her pretty outfits. Here’s a doodle  I left on Dad’s breakfast table in mid-January, showing the lengths (literally, via hair extensions) that he was willing to go to secure an invitation (which Charlotte put the kibbosh on right away, of course).

Rasta Cat

Speaking of breakfast table doodles, since Dad wouldn’t be here to collect his for a while (and knowing I’d never get it together to post one daily, like I did last year when he was in Mexico), I put together 2 weeks’ worth of quick scribbles for him to take along, the morning he left. (I scanned them all in case, God forbid, his luggage got lost.) So here’s a recap of the ones he’s opened so far—no spoilers, Dad!—just for fun.

But the visuals haven’t just been “one way”—Dad just sent me this wonderful photo from the place where they’ve been staying, as well as permission to “retouch as I see fit.” (Uh-oh!)

Looks like they’re having a wonderful time, wouldn’t you say?

Happy Day #8 in Paradise, Dad! And for those of us not currently stationed in Paradise, Happy Tuesday night, and stay warm, everyone!

Still Got That Sparkle

Priscilla and James Get Hitched

My parents got married 60 years ago this past week, and even though Mom passed away in 2010, it still seems like an important milestone to acknowledge, if only with a cat doodle. (And of course our Charlotte agrees!)

Saint Angela's

According to Dad, theirs was a super small, simple wedding. Just the bride and groom, a best man, Mom’s sisters, and their parents—one of whom (Mom’s mother), they weren’t so sure was going to show.

This all transpired at St. Angela’s in Chicago—“outside the rail,” since my dad wasn’t Catholic. Mom’s older sister Alice had gotten married here also, in a beautiful ceremony, 5 years before. Dad remembers St. Angela’s as having had the most lovely pink and blue stained glass windows (which have since been transplanted to another church). I’d have to agree! (You can check them out here, in this virtual tour.)

There aren’t any wedding portraits, other than this snapshot someone took of the raven-haired bride in her Peck & Peck dress—which I’m so glad we have.

—Nor was there an organist, though one had been expected. Dad remembers the sound of Mom’s high heels echoing in the empty church, as she click-clacked her way down the aisle—the first and only time she ever wore high heels (or red nail polish), he says.

Rock & RyeThere were  other likely “firsts and lasts”  that day: The first (and maybe last) meeting of the in-laws. Dad’s milk-drinking father’s first/last Coca-cola…his teetotaling mother’s first/last martini? (Teetotaling, that is, except for an occasional dose of Rock & Rye when  feeling poorly, according to Dad.)

The site of these libations was The Oak Park Arms, where they went for lunch, right after the ceremony.

Weee, these drinks are strong!

One well-remembered quote is from Caddy (Dad’s mother), after she diluted her martini with Guy Harry’s Coke, and drank it all down. (“Weeee! These drinks are strong!”)

Another “Caddy quote” is referenced in my opening cartoon. (When Mom and Dad visited his parents to announce their engagement, she reportedly exclaimed, “What a sweet, miserable life you’re going to have,” or words to that effect.)

Granny Tuttle with Carol Mouse

I have to pause here to insert a snapshot of my grandma Caddy (posing with my sister, Mighty Mouse), in hopes that you can see the twinkle in her eye that I like to think was always there. —Even when she may have said things that a daughter-in-law might misinterpret. We kids sure adored her. She was funny and warm and wore wonderful costume jewelry. And when we went to visit, there was always candy.

But after Caddy’s reaction, my folks may have become more timid about sharing their good news…Who knows? I do know that, rather than bust right out and announce their betrothal to one of their coworker pals, Mom and Dad assembled a little booklet of “visual hints,” using captioned photos of my mom (aka “Miss Young”), hoping he would guess. (He didn’t, says Dad. —Not without further prodding.)

Pris & Jim Engagement Announcement

Pris & Jim Engagement Announcement
OK, so maybe the above clues were a tad cryptic. But I think their booklet’s still pretty charming. And I love thinking of the two of them dreaming it up and having fun working on it together…the first (perhaps?) of many projects ahead.

Here they are, a few years later…and then, quite a few years later. Still smiling.

Jim and Priscilla Tuttle

In closing, on the left, here’s the front of a favorite Papyrus anniversary card that’s been on the fridge since 2008, and which seemed to capture my folks pretty well. (Caption: “You’ve still got that sparkle!”). I paid homage to it, and to Mom, in the scribbled card I left on Dad’s breakfast table last Thursday morning (which you can see on the right).

Anniversary Cards

You’ve definitely still got that sparkle, Mom & Dad — and your story always will have for me. So glad you took that wild reckless leap together sixty years ago, as it turned out to be a pretty sweet deal for my sisters and me. Happy Anniversary, lots of love, and cheers to you both!

A Night to Remember

Charlotte at Obama's Commander-in-Chief Inaugural Ball

This was the scene at our house last night, as we celebrated Barack Obama’s Inauguration, alongside the rest of America. I thought the President and First Lady’s dance at the Commander-in-Chief’s Ball was a wonderful way to cap an uplifting and happy day. And, like Charlotte, I loved Michelle in her beautiful red Jason Wu dress.

Flora Mouse’s favorite part came earlier in the day, during Obama’s inaugural speech. As a mouse in love with a cat, she believes, as many of us do, that all should be free to love  (and marry) whom they choose. So when Obama listed Stonewall alongside Seneca Falls & Selma, it reminded us that our president thinks so, too…another reason to feel great and celebrate!

Here’s a doodle of Flora and Max from our little house party, and a (rare) snapshot taken a little later, when they finally hit the sheets.

Max and Flora Mouse

Congratulations and good luck Mr. President—and may you accomplish many great things, on many fronts, in your second term!

The Downside of Downton

Downton Charlotte

Uh-oh—Charlotte’s been watching Downton Abbey again.

And so, every Sunday night, the rest of us have been watching Downton Abbey, too. Studying the aristocratic Crawleys (and their beautifully-trained staff) is the only hope we have of keeping up with “Her Ladyship’s” new vision…for what life should be like in our own humble home.

So that’s been the downside of Downton: Charlotte’s higher expectations for a more attentive staff (us), more costume changes throughout the day, fancier hats, finer food, etc.

The upside? Fresh material for my daily cat doodles for Dad, of course! (Here’s the Downton-themed cartoon that I left out on the breakfast table just now, in hopes of starting his day off with a smile.)

Breakfast in Bed

I hope this morning finds you with plenty to smile about also—Martin Luther King Day, our President’s Inauguration, a little extra sleep?— as well as looking forward to a great week ahead. (Happy Monday, everyone!)

P.S. Thanks once again to Karen, The Graphics Fairy, for the butterfly, feather, flower, teacup  and teapot used in today’s drawing. You can check out her fantastic collection of vintage clip art images here.

Happy New Year!

Charlotte Attends the Golden GlobesCharlotte insisted that my first blog post of the year feature her in a pretty new dress, so here she is at the awards ceremony last night. (No, she didn’t win, but she did get to spend the evening curled up on various celebrities’ laps—Mirren, Clooney, Spielberg, etc.)

Ten points to anyone who gets Daisy Mouse’s “snood” reference, by the way. (Give up? It’s from White Christmas, of course!)

And speaking of Christmas, I hope everyone out there had a wonderful holiday—fun, festive, peaceful, restful. Mine was spent very happily in cold, wintry Wisconsin, with my dog-niece and -nephew, Molly and Ranger (and Giselle, our mouse-maid, who came along for the cheese).

I emailed Dad this quick doodle from there on New Year’s Eve—some “virtual chicken soup” until I could get home and make him the real thing. (A few days before, he’d caught that nasty flu bug that’s been going around, poor fellow.)

Chicken Soup

Actually, Molly and Ranger really did get to eat steak while I was visiting—about 4 times. (Sorry, Sis.)

Dad through the Ages

On New Year’s Day, we all met back up in Chicagoland—my sister and her family, Dad and me, to celebrate Dad’s 85th birthday over pancakes. Here he is, through the ages. (Lookin’ good, Pop!)

Molly and Ranger were not able to join us, but phoned in their best wishes nonetheless. (See below.)

I hope everyone is having a really great new year so far, and is staying busy, happy and well! Look forward to visiting with you on here again real soon. (I’m hoping to do more frequent, if briefer, posts for a while, in order to circulate more of the looser cat doodles I leave on Dad’s breakfast table each morning. We’re drowning in ’em, so may as well share—eh?)

Meanwhile, Happy New Year, Happy Monday, and have a great week, everyone!

Snowflakes, Sugar Plums, & JavaScript

While I know that many friends out east have already gotten snow — and in some places, way too much of it — we didn’t have our first snow of the season until earlier this week — all 3 tablespoons worth. Very exciting! So exciting, in fact, that it inspired our own little feline sugar plum to haul out her favorite winter holiday costume a little earlier than usual this year.

First Snow Celebration

The rest of the household was pretty psyched by our first wee snowfall as well, as documented in these looser doodles for Dad that showed up on the breakfast table the next morning.

First Snowman of the Season

First Sled Ride

—All were excited except for Blackie, that is. He suffered a major anxiety attack about whether or not we have enough provisions socked away for the coming months. (A concern never  far from his mind, no matter what the season.)

Blackie's Provisions Anxiety

On the subject of snow (and weather in general), just for fun, here’s a handy link to a fake web page I created for an assignment in a JavaScript class I was taking last year around this time, where you can punch in your zip code and see if it’s snowing outside (in case you can’t get to a window, say). You can also check for various kinds of sports headlines on the second page, if sports vs. weather is more your thing.

Weather Report

JavaScript isn’t really my thing, by the way — I would hate to give the false impression that I am more knowledgeable in this area than I actually am. (I understand it better than I did before I took the class, of course, and can do some very basic stuff with it, though I would likely never attempt to write my own JavaScript from scratch, versus refer to a textbook or online tutorial.) I really enjoyed the class, though, as we got to build on our CSS skills at the same time. (Creating the look of a web page — versus figuring out how to make the page do stuff — is a lot more fun for me, and much more my speed.)

Fun With JavaScript

For the morbidly curious non-programmer types (like myself), who would like to understand some of the very basic things that JavaScript can do (and don’t already know), here are a few more homework pages I created, similar to the above. (Click on the images or hyperlinks to go to the actual pages, if you’d like to test them out.)

Again, the JavaScript at work in all of these was written following fairly explicit instructions in the textbook we used, versus me figuring it out all on my own. (We did get to create everything else from scratch though, and make up whatever kind of page we wanted…the fun part, for real.)

Below was our first assigned exercise. We started out nice and easy, giving me extra time to fritter away on headers and color palette and writing fake copy.

Javascript Exercise 1

This next one was a bit more challenging, teaching us how to create those diabolical pop-up dialogue boxes, that will not allow you proceed to the page you want to see, until you provide the answer being sought. (We all love those, don’t we?) Click here if you want to be tortured by it. The second page uses JavaScript that “counts” for you—something I’ve never really figured out how or why you’d use…but there you have it.

Javascript Exercise 2

The pages below include a handy little date and time script (which, for whatever reason, I fell in love with and use on the home page of my current illustration site), plus a not-so-handy tip calculator. (There must be a bazillion mobile apps for this kind of thing, yes?)

Javacript Exercise 3

The contact addresses and company names in all these exercises, like the sites themselves, are all fake, by the way. (Don’t send ’em any inquiries!)

Below is a page that converts fahrenheit to celsius, and a page that confirms that a password is in the correct format and matches itself when typed a second time. (OK, that latter one is pretty useful, I guess, though if I were ever designing a site that needed this kind of thing, I’d likely go running to the nearest bonafide programmer to help me out.)

Javascript Exercises 4

Javascript Exercise 5I think the exercise that brought me the closest to slitting my wrists was the one at left, which involved JavaScript that would confirm that a credit card number was in a valid format. (Something tells me this should not have been as tricky as it was for me, though to be fair, there was an error in the instructions that the instructor warned us was there, but wouldn’t identify, requiring us to do a bit more problem-solving than usual to get the script to work correctly.)

One more…form validation again. (This one doesn’t link to the live page, as I don’t want you to actually submit the form…I just liked the color scheme, header, and background pattern I came up with for this one.) 😉

Javascript Exercise 6

OK, enough (pseudo-) tech talk. Let’s close with another cartoon, shall we? This is one done last year for Dad’s breakfast table while I was taking the above mentioned class. Taking the time to color in my doodles was one of my favorite procrastination techniques when I should have been doing homework. (It was also very soothing for my nerves.)

I Hate Javacript
Speaking of having fun, time for me to sign off and go get started on my weekend. (Hope you enjoy yours as well!) Happy Saturday, everyone!

Congratulations, Mr. President!

Sunny Side Up Charlotte

Lunch with MichelleI conked out around 7 PM last night, waking up in the wee hours to hear the good news. (Good news, that is, for me and other Obama supporters…though I hope good news for everyone, when all is said and done.) While I missed hearing Obama’s acceptance speech live, and also Romney’s concession speech (which has been praised as very gracious), there are thankfully always second chances to get current, and I since have. (And may I say, “Beautifully said, as usual, Chief!”)

Meanwhile, the President’s victory was also a victory for Charlotte, as it turns out. By way of explanation, here’s the quick hand-drawn doodle that was on Dad’s breakfast table yesterday—which was not only Election Day, but was the morning after he and Charlotte drove up to Madison, WI, to have lunch with my sister Carol and watch Airforce One take off, after Obama’s rally there. I wasn’t aware that the First Lady was even in the vicinity, but apparently—in some parallel cartoon universe perhaps—Charlotte had lunch with her, and worked out some kind of deal. So, it looks like four more years of Empress Charlotte as well…and hopefully many more.

Here’s a quick snapshot of Her Highness, resting up on Dad’s lap after casting her vote yesterday.

Charlotte Voted

Whether you are feeling celebratory or not regarding the outcome of our election, I guess one thing we’re probably all thrilled about is no more political ads for a while, eh? I’m hoping there are many more things ahead that we can all get behind and celebrate soon.

Many thanks for visiting The Daily Cat Doodle, and special thanks to my Republican friends for coming back. (No more politics for a while, I promise.)  My best to all, and here’s to new beginnings!

Happy Election Day!

Vote for Obama 2012—Not that you necessarily need another reminder that it’s Election Day, but then again, I figured it couldn’t hurt.

Also on an election theme, I wanted to share a fun “awareness campaign” created by my friend Gayle Kabaker, with a little help from her friends. Gayle envisioned a series of pro-Obama images that would generate interest and enthusiasm—and which could easily be shared on Facebook and beyond—as the election drew near. She approached Mitch Anthony, a branding consultant, and Laura Radwell, a designer and marketing consultant, to brainstorm, create copy and layouts—using a few of Gayle’s own images to start off with, then inviting other artists to join in. I thought the end result—a series of ten very striking digital posters, each with its own strong, positive message—was pretty terrific!

Art for Obama Campaign

Illustrations by (top row, left to right): Jean Tuttle, Brian Stauffer, Gayle Kabaker, Hadley Hooper, Gayle Kabaker; (second row): Gayle Kabaker (2), James Steinberg, Anthony Russo, Robert Meganck

If you’re on Facebook, you can see individual posts for all ten of the posters here. (Note: A pop-up box may tell you that you need to sign in to Facebook to proceed; just click the “close” button in the lower right of the pop-up box, and scroll down to see everything; all the posts are public.) I’ll also include a few of them here, at a larger size.

Here’s the last, most recent poster in the series (and my personal favorite), “Music Matters” by Gayle Kabaker, referencing Obama’s support for the arts:

Music Matters by Gayle Kabaker

And here’s another wonderful image, signifying momentum and forward movement, by our friend, James Steinberg, entitled “Full Steam Ahead.”

James Steingerg's Full Steam Ahead

I also really love this one by Denver illustrator Hadley Hooper. (Great message, too.) It’s not easy to combine strength and lyricism in an image…but it’s one of the (many) things that Hadley excels at.

Hadley Hooper for Obama

Lastly, here’s the image Gayle included of mine, showing positive gains in marriage equality under Obama (which, no matter who is in office, I sure hope will continue).

Jean Tuttle's Marriage is a Right

Thanks again, Gayle, for all your effort and inspiration, and for including me in the fun. I so enjoyed being a part of this special project. Happy Election Day to you (and to everyone else out there, too)!

—And good luck to all the folks out east who are still dealing with storm-related challenges—whether mild or more severe—and for whom just getting to the polls may be difficult, or perhaps even impossible. Thinking of you, and wishing you, especially, all the best today…and much, much smoother sailing, straight ahead.

Trick or Treat

Happy Halloween, all you night owls, who might still be up and at your computers (or iPads). Here’s the Halloween report from our house in Chicagoland, spanning the last several days.

This was the scene here on Saturday, as Charlotte tried on her costume and got into character, as wicked Queen Ravenna (from Snow White and the Huntsman), just a few days early.

Charlotte Pays a Neighborly Visit

—All dressed up, and some place to go, as it turns out! (You might remember Blackie’s “new friend” Mrs. Jones from a doodle or two back. Yes, he’s still been sneaking over there for meals whenever he can.)

After Saturday, it was a bit harder for us all to focus, and to get in a Halloween mood. Our eyes were mostly on CNN, and our thoughts with our friends and countrymen out East, who were anticipating, and then dealing with, that wicked storm Sandy. For so many of them, still flooded, still no power, it was unlikely to be any kind of Halloween at all. And it’s felt terrible not being able to provide any kind of hands-on support.

Although we did end up hosting one refugee from the storm, a very wind-blown witch, resulting in this doodle for Dad on the breakfast table the next morning.

Best Witches from Sandy

Here are a few more Halloween-themed cartoons Dad found on the breakfast table this past week, just for the heck of it.

We sometimes have visitors in the back patio, despite the tall fence. (Which may have something to do with the raw peanuts and pieces of bread I throw out there on occasion). One night last week, the buffet had more takers than usual, including a very large raccoon, and a well-mannered skunk. This was Dad’s doodle the next morning. (Good thing that our mousemaid Giselle had gone candy-shopping early!)

Backyard Trick or Treaters

As Halloween drew closer, there did end up being some debate and preparations regarding costumes—at least among the household cats and mice.

Charlotte PumpkinCharlotte tried on a few. The one at left got discarded for obvious reasons. (Despite Daisy Mouse’s reassurances, Charlotte knew it wasn’t her best look.)

Blackie on the other hand, hit on a perfect costume right away. He’s alway convinced—and trying to convince us—that he’s starving. Dressing as a skeleton was a smart choice, and served a dual purpose.

Blackie in His Skeleton Costume

Charlotte had several costumes lined up in the end, for multiple forays into the neighborhood, including this one she borrowed from our New Jersey guest, shown in Dad’s cartoon from this morning. Dad gets up early, but not usually this early. (Guy Harry, by the way, is Dad’s own dad, famous for his pre-dawn departures, whenever an outing was planned.)

Halloween Morning

Here’s one more, showing Charlotte making the rounds later on in the day, this time in her fairy costume. (Kind of a private joke, I guess: Tom Gayer was an old friend of my dad’s who used to go adult trick-or-treating, door to door, with a shot glass. Charlotte is as fond of fresh ice water as he was of Scotch.)

Ice Water Please
As far as trick-or-treaters coming to our house went, we only got 3. We didn’t really expect more. But here we were at 4 PM, prepared and hopeful, just in case.

Happy Halloween from Dad and Jean

Blown Cover Halloween Runner-up #1(Two final images, and then I’m going to post this thing, bring the witch in off the front stoop, have another Milky Way, and go to bed.)

This was my other submission from last month’s Blown Covers Contest, that I realized I hadn’t shared with you yet — which made Runner-up #1. And here’s a scribble of Aaron Mouse, working on his Blown Covers entry (which, as usual, mysteriously never got submitted). Hope you like. (Charlotte didn’t.)

However you spent it, and wherever you were, I hope your Halloween was a good one. Even if you were out East and did not have power, or were dealing with Sandy’s intrusion in other ways, I hope the day still found you safe, warm, and surrounded by friends. All the best, and Happy Halloween!
